On a sunny spring evening, nearly 1,500 children from South LA and Rampart District gathered at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels to celebrate music and family as performers in the YOLA Neighborhood Project Day concert. After an introduction by LAUSD Superintendant John Deasy, K-2 students from YOLA Neighborhood Project schools and young musicians from YOLA sites shared musical performances of all kinds with the thousands of parents, family and friends there to support the young performers. The concert’s big finale—a performance of Sibelius’s “Finlandia”—involved all of the student musicians together in a performance that filled the cathedral with music.
Through Gustavo Dudamel's Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) program – inspired by Venezuela's revolutionary El Sistema – the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to over 600 students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change.
